Can Gernot Rohr break his trophy-less hoodoo?
Can Gernot Rohr break his personal record in 2022?

It’s no news that the Nigeria Football Federation through president Amaju Pinnick has extended coach Gernot Rohr’s contract after a very prolonged discussion between both sides.

However, the new deal contains two very strong tasks –first to qualify for 2022 world Cup while the second is to win the next African Cup of Nation in the same year.

Taking a very deep look at the two tasks, it appears that the country’s football governing body wants more from the gaffer who has been in the helm of affairs since 2016.

Can Gernot Rohr Break His Trophy Hoodoo With Super Eagles Highly Talented Squad

Despite being a manager since , Rohr is yet to win a major trophy which further cast huge doubt on his chances of achieving the NFF task.

He was so closed to breaking the hoodoo during the previous AFCON tournament in Egypt but his wards failed to overcomes Algeria’s challenge in the semifinal round of the competition.

Rohr and his men could only settle for a third-place finish as they narrowly defeated Tunisia in an encounter many often refer to as the “loser’s final”

Qualifying for the next AFCON tournament shouldn’t be any problem for the super eagles who currently occupy the first position in a qualifying group that consists of African  minnow such as Sierra Leone, Benin Republic and Lesotho

Hence, it is a foregone conclusion that in two years time, the gaffer will be charged with the responsibility of leading the boys to glory in Cameroon.

Considering the talents and quality of players at his disposal, the 68-year-old gaffer stands a better chance of winning the title than the chances he had in 2019.

The young squad must have picked one or two lessons from their ouster against Algeria and will definitely make them count in the next competition.

Lots of changes have been made since the last AFCON tournament as the manager has been able to fortify every department of the squad.

Though still unproven, the addition of Sparta Rotterdam’s latest acquisition Maduka Okoye will surely bring more competitions and quality to the goalkeeping department.

The introduction of Kingsley Ehizibue to the defensive setup will no doubt improve the backline and the attacking prowess of the side.

The Netherland-born star is known for his pace and attacking prowess, hence, the team will surely benefit from his overall potentials.

Two goals in four appearances, Joe Aribo is one man whose influence in the team continues to rise exponentially.

The Rangers man is another player added to the team post AFCON 2019 and he is definitely a player who can bring the best out of Alex Iwobi, if Rohr didn’t use him as Iwobi’s replacement.

Ovie Ejaria’s reported switch to the Super Eagles from England is another good development and one that will bolster the team’s midfield performance.

In the same vein, Rohr has equally added more firepower to his frontline following the introduction of in-form Genk forward Cyriel kolawole Dessers to the team.

The Belgium-eligible striker is seen as a capable replacement for Odion Ighalo who put an end to his international career immediately after 2019 AFCON tournament.

Dessers, Osimhen, Iheanacho and Josh Maja all possess what it takes to fire the team to their fourth African cup of nation triumph.

Any of these Five players might equally break into the team before the tournament

2022 will be the best time for Rohr to end his trophy drought because he will have the needed players, fans supports and – probably— financial support to make things happen.

As for the World cup qualifying task, we will discuss that some other time.
